Process Questions
How long does the process take?
Typically 60-90 days from when you submit your complete documents to us. The pre-departure phase (apostilles, translations) can take 1-3 months depending on your home country. The in-country portion takes 1-2 weeks. Post-filing waiting period is 45-90 days for DNM to issue your residency card.
Do I need to be present in Paraguay?
Yes, you'll need at least one visit for the in-country processing phase. This covers biometric submission at Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, local document procurement (Interpol check, police certificate, medical exam), and initial filings. We coordinate everything to minimize your time on the ground — most clients complete the in-person requirements in 5-7 days.
What documents do I need?
Requirements vary by nationality but typically include: valid passport with apostille, birth certificate with apostille, police clearance certificate from home country with apostille, local police certificate, medical certificate, biometric photos, and completed application forms. Is the $5,000 bank deposit still required?
No. Law 6984/2022 (enacted in 2022) eliminated the bank deposit requirement for temporary residency. This was a significant change that made Paraguay residency much more accessible. You no longer need to maintain a minimum bank balance to qualify.
How many times do I need to visit Paraguay per year?

Is residency the same as tax residency?
No. Paraguay residency (immigration status) and tax residency are separate legal concepts with separate criteria. Holding a cédula does not automatically make you a Paraguayan tax resident. How tax rules apply to you depends on your facts and home-country obligations. This is not tax advice — consult qualified counsel in every relevant jurisdiction.
Banking Questions
Can I open a bank account in Paraguay?
Yes, once you have your Cédula (national ID card). The main banks serving expats are Itaú, Continental, BBVA Paraguay, and Sudameris. What currencies can I hold in a Paraguay bank?
Paraguayan banks hold accounts in Paraguayan Guaraní (PYG), US Dollars (USD), and Euros. USD accounts are common and widely used by expats. There are no capital controls restricting transfers in or out.

What's the path to Paraguay citizenship?
The path is: (1) Temporary residency (minimum 2 years) → (2) Permanent residency → (3) 3 years of permanent residency → (4) Citizenship application. Total minimum time: approximately 5 years. Paraguay citizenship is naturalization-based and requires demonstrating integration, language proficiency, and civic knowledge.
What passport does Paraguay citizenship give me?
Paraguay's passport ranks approximately 31st globally with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 141-146 countries, including all Schengen Area states, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, and all Mercosur countries. Paraguay citizens also enjoy live-and-work rights across the Mercosur bloc (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia). The passport is also eligible for US E-2 investor visa applications.
Do I need to renounce my current citizenship?
Paraguay allows dual citizenship for naturalized citizens. You do not need to renounce your original citizenship to obtain Paraguayan citizenship. However, your home country may have its own rules about dual citizenship — check with your home country's embassy.
Is there a language requirement for citizenship?
